Green Taco Seasoning

Green Taco Seasoning is a homemade spice blend featuring dried green bell pepper flakes, onion powders, garlic powder, cumin, cilantro, oregano, and various peppers for heat. This seasoning mix is used to flavor ground or shredded meat, simmered with water to create a well-seasoned taco filling. It can be made in bulk and stored for later use.

Description

This Green Taco Seasoning combines dried green bell pepper flakes, dried minced white onion, garlic powder, cumin, onion powder, dried cilantro, kosher salt, Mexican or regular oregano, crushed dried jalapeno, black pepper, cayenne, and red pepper flakes. The mixture is stirred well and can be used immediately or stored in an airtight container.

To use, brown one pound of ground meat such as beef, turkey, chicken, or pork, then drain excess fat. Sprinkle the seasoning over the cooked meat and add about a third of a cup of water. Simmer on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally until the liquid is absorbed. This process infuses the meat with balanced earthy, herbaceous, and spicy flavors.

The seasoned meat is versatile for tacos, nachos, enchiladas, quesadillas, breakfast burritos, and more. For bulk preparation, grinding the mix can ensure consistency, but stirring before each use provides even seasoning distribution.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tablespoon green bell pepper flakes dried
  • 2 teaspoons white onion dried, minced
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cilantro dried
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt Morton brand
  • ½ teaspoon Mexican oregano (or regular oregano)
  • ¼ teaspoon jalapeno pepper dried, crushed
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 pinch red pepper flakes dried

Instructions

  1. Measure all ingredients into a small bowl, then stir to combine. Use immediately, or store in an airtight jar or container in a cool, dark spot for up to 6 months.

Notes

  • This recipe yields about 1/4 cup seasoning, perfect for seasoning 1 pound of meat.
  • For best flavor, sprinkle the seasoning after browning the meat and add water before simmering to absorb flavors.
  • Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place for up to six months.
  • Grinding the mixture when making in bulk helps keep spices evenly sized, but stirring well before use works if not ground.
