Ground Beef Tacos
Description
The recipe begins by sautéing diced onions in neutral oil until soft, developing a mild sweetness. Ground beef is added and browned over medium-high heat with constant breaking to ensure even cooking. Seasoning with taco spices, black pepper, and a mild tomato sauce enriches the meat without overwhelming it.
Simultaneously, white corn tortillas are individually fried in hot oil until golden and crisp. Folding them while hot shapes each into a firm taco shell that holds the filling and toppings securely. The combination of crunchy shells and well-seasoned beef creates a satisfying bite with familiar Mexican flavors.
These tacos can be dressed with toppings like fresh tomato, lettuce, shredded cheese, and creamy sides such as sour cream or guacamole. They work well for casual meals and gatherings where self-assembly or customization is desired.
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon neutral cooking oil generic cooking oil
- 1/2 onion (diced)
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 3 Tablespoons taco seasoning
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce no spices added, canned
- 8 white corn tortillas
- neutral cooking oil generic cooking oil
Taco Toppings:
- cheese grated
- salsa
- guacamole
- sour cream
- tomato diced, fresh
- lettuce
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add oil. Add onions and cook until tender, about 6-7 minutes.
- Add ground beef and increase heat to medium-high. Break up with a wooden spoon. Cook until the ground beef is browned and no longer pink, about 8-10 minutes.
- While beef is cooking, heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add enough oil to completely coat the pan. Heat the oil. Once it is heated, carefully add each tortilla, one at a time. Turn to cook both sides. Once it is golden and crisp, remove it from the skillet with tongs, and immediately fold it in half to make a taco shell. Set aside on a paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain. Repeat.
- Once the ground beef is cooked, sprinkle the ground beef with taco seasoning, pepper, and add tomato sauce (make sure there are no spices added to canned tomato sauce). Stir to coat and heat for several minutes.
- Fill each taco shell with the ground beef mixture. Fill with your taco toppings of choice. Serve warm.
Notes
- Serve with homemade salsa, guacamole, queso dip, or cowboy caviar with chips for complementary flavors.
