Guacamole

Guacamole is a creamy Mexican avocado-based dip made by mashing ripe avocados and mixing them with fresh lime juice, diced Roma tomatoes, jalapeño, red onion, cilantro, and salt. The result is a textured, tangy, and mildly spicy spread that works well as a snack, condiment, or appetizer.

Description

This Guacamole recipe starts by preparing fresh ingredients: lime juice, finely diced tomatoes, de-seeded jalapeño for mild heat, red onion, and chopped cilantro. Mashed ripe avocados form the creamy base into which the fresh vegetable mix is folded. The lime juice adds brightness and acidity, balancing the rich avocado, while salt enhances all the flavors. The combination of textures comes from the smoothness of the mashed avocado and the crispness of the fresh diced vegetables.

The mild heat from the jalapeño and freshness from the cilantro give this guacamole a zesty character without overpowering the creamy avocado. This makes it suitable for serving with tortilla chips, as a topping for tacos, or alongside grilled meats and vegetables for added moisture and flavor. Adjusting lime juice and salt allows customization of the acidity and seasoning according to taste preferences.

Guacamole is best eaten fresh to retain the bright color and fresh flavors. Preparing the add-ins first and then mixing with avocado ensures even distribution and proper seasoning. Peeling and pitting the avocados before mashing helps achieve the desired smooth, spreadable texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lime $0.89, fresh, 2 Tbsp juice
  • 2 Roma tomato $0.44
  • 1 jalapeño $0.09
  • 1/4 red onion $0.11
  • 2 Tbsp cilantro $0.15, chopped, fresh
  • 3 medium avocado $5.00, or 4 small
  • 1/2 tsp salt $0.02

Instructions

  1. Prepare the guacamole add-ins first. Juice the lime. Finely dice the tomatoes, jalapeño (remove seeds), and red onion. Roughly chop the cilantro.
  2. Remove the peels and pits from the avocados. Place the avocados in a bowl, then mash them with a fork.
  3. Add the diced tomato, onion, and jalapeño to the mashed avocados, along with the chopped cilantro, about 1 Tbsp of lime juice and ¼ tsp salt.
  4. Stir the ingredients together, then taste the guacamole. Add more lime and salt to your liking. I usually end up adding about 2 Tbsp lime juice and ½ tsp salt total. Serve and enjoy!
