Ham and Cheese Egg Casserole Recipe
Description
The Ham and Cheese Egg Casserole starts with a base of crescent roll dough pressed into a baking dish, creating a soft and slightly flaky crust. Diced cooked ham and grated cheddar are layered over the dough to distribute savory and sharp flavors throughout. A mixture of whisked eggs, milk, salt, and pepper is then poured over, allowing the eggs to soak into the layers during baking.
Baked until set and golden, the casserole has a tender, custard-like egg texture complemented by melted cheese and bits of ham. Serving with a garnish of green onion adds freshness. This dish is suitable for feeding a group at breakfast or brunch and can be sliced into squares for easy portions.
The recipe allows for flexibility in meat or cheese choices, and the crescent dough crust adds convenience and texture contrast. It can be prepared ahead and baked when ready, making it practical for morning meal planning.
Ingredients
- 1 (8 ounce) crescent roll dough refrigerated, canned, or crescent rolls
- 1 ½ cups ham cooked, diced, about 7 ounces
- 1 cup cheddar cheese grated
- 6 egg
- 2 cups milk (I use 2% milk)
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- green onion chopped, optional garnish, sliced
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Spray a 13-inch x 9-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
- Unroll crescent dough and spread in the bottom of the prepared dish.
- Place diced ham on top of crescent rolls. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. Add salt and pepper, to taste.
- Pour egg mixture over ham and cheese.
- Bake, uncovered, for 35 – 40 minutes, or until eggs are set. Slice into squares.
- Garnish with fresh chives just before serving!
Notes
- Assemble the casserole the night before and refrigerate up to 8 hours before baking for convenience.
- Store leftover casserole in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 2 months wrapped tightly.
- Reheat baked casserole in a 350°F oven for about 20 minutes until warmed through; cover with foil if it browns too quickly.
- Use a crescent dough sheet without perforations, or pinch regular crescent rolls together to form a sheet.
- Substitute diced ham with sautéed vegetables for a vegetarian option; cook vegetables first to avoid excess moisture.
- Variations include using bacon or adding hash browns instead of crescent dough or ham for different flavors and textures.
