Hamburger Gravy

Hamburger gravy is a rich, savory sauce made from ground beef cooked with onion and garlic, thickened with flour, and simmered in a combination of milk and beef broth. It’s flavored with Worcestershire sauce and seasoned simply with salt and pepper, creating a hearty gravy that pairs well with biscuits or mashed potatoes. The cooking process allows the beef fat to meld into the sauce, giving it a smooth, comforting texture and a balanced, meaty flavor.

Description

This hamburger gravy begins by browning lean ground beef with diced onion and minced garlic, allowing the flavors to develop without draining the fat, as it contributes richness to the sauce. Worcestershire sauce adds a subtle depth. Flour is then stirred in and cooked briefly to eliminate the raw taste, forming a roux that thickens the gravy. The addition of milk and beef broth results in a creamy, well-balanced gravy that thickens over medium heat.

The finished gravy has a smooth, velvety consistency with tender bits of beef and a gentle onion and garlic presence. It is best served hot over biscuits or mashed potatoes, providing a filling, meat-flavored topping that complements these sides well.

A note from the original recipe suggests adjusting the liquid for a creamier texture by reducing broth and increasing milk. This allows customization based on personal preference.
