Harissa Yogurt Dip
Description
The recipe starts by peeling and mincing garlic, which is then lightly sautéed in olive oil until fragrant and just browned. This step softens the harshness of raw garlic and infuses the oil with flavor. The garlic and flavored oil are combined in a bowl with creamy Greek yogurt and sour cream, followed by a pinch of salt and garlic powder for seasoning. Harissa paste and fresh lemon juice are added incrementally, mixed thoroughly, and tasted to adjust the heat and acidity to preference. The dip serves as a bright, creamy accompaniment enhanced by the smoky, spicy harissa and fresh lemon. It can be made ahead and stays fresh refrigerated for several days, making it convenient for use in various dishes such as vegetable dips, sandwich spreads, or sauce drizzles.
Ingredients
- 3 cloves garlic
- 1 TBSP extra virgin olive oil
- 1-2 TBSP harissa paste
- 1 cup Greek yogurt
- ½ cup sour cream
- 1-2 TBSP lemon juice fresh
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ¾ tsp salt
Instructions
- Peel and mince garlic.
- Add garlic and oil to a small skillet and heat to medium-high. Sauté, stirring often, for approx. 1-2 minutes until garlic is fragrant. Remove from heat once garlic begins to brown.
- In a large bowl, add yogurt, sour cream garlic (in oil) and season with salt and garlic powder. Add one tablespoon each of harissa paste and lemon juice and mix well. Give it a taste and if you can handle the heat, add that extra tablespoon! Loving the lemon? Add another tablespoon. I loved mine with 2 TBSP each of lemon juice and harissa paste.
- Mix it all together and dive in with pita and veggies or use it as a zesty sandwich spread for a pita pocket or wrap. Making it in advance? It'll stay fresh 3-4 days in the fridge.
Notes
- This dip can be made ahead and refrigerated for 3 to 4 days to let flavors develop further.
- Adjust levels of harissa paste and lemon juice to control heat and brightness to your taste.
- Use it as a dip for pita chips and fresh vegetables or as a spread for chicken gyros or wraps.
- It pairs well with grilled meats, roasted veggies, and can be drizzled over shawarma bowls.
