Healthy Hibiscus Margarita
Description
The Healthy Hibiscus Margarita combines hibiscus syrup or concentrated hibiscus tea with fresh lime juice, gold or silver 100% agave tequila, and an orange liqueur like Grand Marnier. The cocktail is prepared by stirring the ingredients over crushed ice, which chills the drink and slightly dilutes the syrup for balance. Rimming the glass with salt or sugar complements the tartness and sweetness of the drink. Garnishing with a lime wedge, rehydrated hibiscus flower, or fresh berries adds color and fragrance.
Its flavor profile features the floral tartness of hibiscus paired with citrus brightness and smooth warmth from the tequila and orange liqueur. The preparation avoids shaking or blending, preserving the syrup's texture and flavors. Served over crushed ice, the drink stays refreshingly cold and slow to dilute.
This margarita can be served as a refreshing cocktail or modified into a non-alcoholic thirst quencher by diluting hibiscus syrup with sparkling water. It suits warm-weather sipping or social occasions where a distinct floral twist is desired.
To prepare larger batches, maintain the same ingredient ratios for consistency. The hibiscus syrup itself can also be used diluted in sparkling water or water for a refreshing Agua de Jamaica. Garnishing and glass rimming are optional but enhance presentation and taste.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons hibiscus syrup or concentrated hibiscus tea
- 2 tablespoons lime juice freshly squeezed
- 2 tablespoons tequila gold or silver, 100% agave
- 1 tablespoon orange liqueur I used Grand Marnier
- salt for garnish, rimmed glass and wedge of lime
- sugar
- lime
Instructions
- If desired, first rim glass with salt or sugar. Run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass, turning glass upside down into a plate of margarita salt or other coarse salt.
- Fill glass with crushed ice, then add hibiscus syrup, lime juice, tequila and grand marnier, stir to combine. If desired, garnish with a wedge of lime, hibiscus flower (rehydrated or from a syrup) and or other fresh seasonal berries.
Notes
- Prepare a larger batch by keeping the ingredient ratios consistent and serve about half a cup over ice.
- For a non-alcoholic version, mix one to two tablespoons of hibiscus syrup with ice and sparkling water.
- To make Agua de Jamaica, dilute the hibiscus syrup further with water and serve chilled with ice.
