Healthy Sausage Gravy Breakfast Casserole
Description
This casserole starts with a crescent roll dough pressed into a baking dish then covered with egg whites seasoned with ranch seasoning mix. After baking the egg layer until set, it is topped with cooked ground turkey combined with prepared country-style sausage gravy. Shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese are sprinkled on top, then the assembled casserole is baked briefly again to melt the cheese and meld the flavors.
The result is a layered breakfast dish featuring a soft and slightly crisp dough base, fluffy and well-seasoned egg whites, savory turkey and gravy mixture, and gooey melted cheese, offering rich flavor and texture contrasts.
This casserole serves well for breakfast or brunch and can be reheated effectively in an air fryer to restore its crispness and soft interior, though oven and microwave work as well.
Gluten-free options can be made by using gluten-free crescent rolls, and dairy-free by choosing appropriate cheese alternatives.
Ingredients
- 20 oz. ground turkey raw, 99% lean
- 1 .64-oz. country gravy mix sausage flavor, packs
- 1 oz. crescent rolls I used Pillsbury, package
- 2 cups egg whites, 480g
- 1/2 cup cheddar cheese shredded, 56g
- 1/4 cup mozzarella cheese 28g
- 1 Tbsp ranch seasoning mix or 1 tsp of EACH: onion powder, garlic powder, salt and 1/4 tsp pepper
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9x13” baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
For the Egg White Pizza:
- Open crescent rolls and place along the bottom of the dish. Press down to spread and even out along the bottom and part of the sides of the dish. Try to seal the seams as much as possible.
- Shake egg white carton up and pour slowly over the crescent roll dough. Sprinkle with ranch seasoning mix and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until egg whites are cooked throughout.
For the Turkey:
- In a large skillet, add the ground turkey. Cook on medium heat until no longer pink, breaking into smaller pieces with a wooden spoon as you go.
For the Sausage Gravy:
- Meanwhile, prepare the country gravy according to package directions. I did this in the microwave.
Assembly:
- Mix the ground turkey and sausage gravy together, then add evenly on top of the egg white pizza. Sprinkle it with cheese.
- Bake for 5 minutes or until the cheese has melted. Take out, let cool for 5-10 minutes and enjoy!
Notes
- Use gluten-free crescent roll dough to make this casserole gluten-free.
- Substitute dairy-free cheese to make it dairy-free.
- Reheat leftovers in an air fryer to maintain a crispy exterior and soft interior; oven or microwave are suitable alternatives.
