Hemp Milk

This Hemp Milk recipe combines hemp hearts with water, sweetened mildly with Medjool dates and flavored with vanilla extract. The blender mixes all ingredients until smooth, and typically the milk is strained to remove pulp, resulting in a creamy, mild nutty beverage. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to five days, providing a plant-based milk alternative with subtle natural sweetness and a hint of vanilla.

Description

Hemp Milk starts with hemp hearts blended into filtered water, blended thoroughly to break down the seeds. Adding pitted Medjool dates provides natural sweetness without refined sugar, while vanilla extract contributes a gentle aroma and flavor. Straining through a fine mesh or nut milk bag can remove residue, producing a smooth drink, though the pulp is minimal and optional to remove. This method preserves the creaminess and natural nutty essence of hemp seeds.

The milk is best served chilled and can be a versatile dairy substitute for drinking, adding to coffee, or using in recipes that call for plant-based milk. It offers a subtle, slightly earthy flavor balanced by vanilla and date sweetness, without overpowering other ingredients.

Hemp Milk stores well in the refrigerator for up to 5 days in an airtight container. Before serving, shaking or stirring is recommended in case any sediment settles at the bottom. Nutritional estimates are based on dividing the batch into four servings.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 cups water 32 ounces, filtered
  • 1/2 cup hemp hearts (70 grams)
  • 2 large Medjool dates (pitted; or 1 tablespoon maple syrup)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5 grams)

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until the hemp hearts are completely broken down, about 60 seconds.
  2. Pour the milk through a fine mesh strainer or nut milk bag, to remove any pulp. (There won't be a lot strained out, so this is optional if you don't mind a bit of sediment in the bottom of your cup.) Serve right away, or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • Using pitted Medjool dates sweetens the milk naturally but maple syrup can be substituted if preferred.
  • Straining the milk is optional; leaving pulp adds texture but not much volume.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consume within 5 days for best freshness.
  • Shake well before use to redistribute any settled sediment.
