Homemade Croutons

These Homemade Croutons combine bread cubes with Parmesan cheese, olive oil, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Baking the coated bread cubes creates crunchy, flavorful croutons with a savory twist from the Parmesan. They add a crisp texture and zesty note to salads or soups, and turning the cubes halfway through baking ensures even browning and crispness.

Description

Homemade Croutons use bread cubes tossed in a mixture of grated Parmesan, olive oil, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper before baking. Baking at 375°F crisps the cubes, while tossing them halfway through baking promotes uniform golden browning. Parmesan adds a nutty, savory depth and the seasoning blend lends herbal and garlicky flavors. These croutons deliver a crunchy contrast to leafy salads or creamy soups, enhancing both texture and taste.

The croutons are made from cut bread cubes, preferably similar in size for even baking. The cheese and seasoning coating adheres thanks to the olive oil, which also helps crisp the cubes during baking. They are cooled completely before storage to help maintain their crunch. Adjusting the garlic powder and Italian seasoning allows for tailoring the flavor profile.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese grated
  • cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • 4 cups bread cubes I used gluten-free bread

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, add the grated Parmesan cheese, olive oil, garlic powder, Italian seasoning and salt and pepper. Mix everything.
  3. Add bread cubes and toss to coat.
  4. Spread the bread cubes on the lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated 375 F oven for about 20 minutes turning halfway through.

Notes

  • Cut the bread into evenly sized cubes to ensure uniform cooking and crispness.
  • For a vegan option, omit the Parmesan cheese or substitute with a vegan cheese alternative.
  • Turn the croutons halfway through baking for even browning and maximum crunch.
  • Allow the croutons to cool completely before storing to maintain their crisp texture.
