Homemade Melba Toast
Description
Homemade Melba Toast transforms simple white bread into thin, crisp toast triangles perfect for snacks or garnishes. The slices are first lightly toasted on both sides to firm them up. After trimming off the crusts, each slice is carefully sliced horizontally to create thin slices and halved into triangles. These triangles are then broiled briefly on the untoasted side to achieve a delicate crispness. The result is a light, crunchy texture suitable for pairing with spreads or serving alongside soups or salads.
The method focuses on careful slicing to ensure thinness, and close attention under the broiler to avoid burning as the toast crisps quickly. These toasts can be used for finger foods, canapés, or as a base for toppings.
Ingredients
- 10 lices white bread
Instructions
- Heat the broiler/grill to medium.
- Place the slices of bread onto a baking sheet and toast them lightly on both sides.
- Cut the crusts off each slice of toast.
- Using a non-serrated knife, carefully slice through the middle of each slice (see picture above) to give you 2 thin slices.
- Cut each thin slice in half to create 2 triangles.
- Put the triangles, untoasted-side up, onto a baking sheet and place them back under the broiler/grill to crisp. This will take about 2 minutes. Watch them carefully, as the toast will burn easily.
