Homemade Pizza Sauce

This homemade pizza sauce is made by sautéing onion and garlic in olive oil before adding crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Seasoned with dried basil, oregano, sugar, and salt, the sauce simmers until thickened, providing a balanced and flavorful base for pizzas. Its cooked depth enhances homemade or store-bought dough, making it a practical pizza staple.

Description

The sauce starts with gentle cooking of finely diced onion and minced garlic in olive oil until tender, extracting their sweetness. Crushed tomatoes and concentrated tomato paste are then stirred in to build tomato intensity. Dried basil and oregano add herby notes typical of pizza sauce, while granulated sugar balances acidity. Salt is adjusted to taste. The mixture is brought to a boil, then simmered until it thickens, forming a rich, glossy sauce suitable for spreading on pizza dough.

This sauce is adaptable and can be used on various pizza styles. Its thickness helps prevent sogginess in the crust. The mild herb seasoning pairs well with many pizza toppings without overpowering them.

Adding more tomato paste can intensify the flavor if desired. Store any leftovers refrigerated and use within a reasonable time to maintain freshness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ¼ cup onion finely diced
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 8 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon basil dried
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
