Homemade Salsa Recipe (Pico de Gallo)

This Homemade Salsa Recipe (Pico de Gallo) combines a variety of diced fresh tomatoes, red onion, minced garlic, and chopped cilantro with finely diced jalapeño for heat. Lime juice and seasonings of kosher salt and black pepper balance the flavors. The salsa is freshly mixed and served as a fresh, chunky condiment with a bright, tangy, and mildly spicy profile. It pairs well with tacos and can be stored in the refrigerator for several days.

Description

The salsa starts with tomatoes of different sizes and types—Roma, cocktail, and grape—roughly diced for textural variety. Red onion, garlic, and cilantro add aromatic notes and complexity, while diced jalapeño provides controlled heat, adjustable by quantity.

Lime juice is squeezed in to bring acidity and brightness that complements the sweetness of tomatoes and the freshness of herbs. Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper season the mixture to round out the flavor.

This fresh salsa is a staple topping for tacos or can be served as a side dip. It is best prepared fresh but can be refrigerated for up to three days, allowing flavors to meld.

Taste testing the jalapeño before adding it allows adjustment for preferred spice level. Additional lime juice can be added to balance flavors after mixing.

Add in the juice from another lime if necessary.

  • Squeeze lime juice gradually and adjust seasoning to achieve balanced acidity and flavor.
  • Store the salsa covered in the refrigerator for up to three days to allow flavors to develop and for freshness.
  • This salsa works well as a taco topping or a fresh side condiment.
