Homemade Taco Seasoning

This homemade taco seasoning blends chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, pepper, cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and red pepper flakes to create a balanced, versatile spice mix. It adds savory depth, mild heat, and aromatic notes to taco meat or other dishes, allowing control over ingredients and flavor intensity compared to store-bought versions.

Description

The Homemade Taco Seasoning combines a precise blend of chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes for heat, with cornstarch to help the seasonings adhere well when cooking. This mix provides a rich, smoky, and slightly spicy profile suitable for seasoning ground beef, chicken, or other proteins.

To use, brown the meat and then simmer it with water and the seasoning until the liquid reduces, coating the meat with flavorful spices. The seasoning can be stored up to a year in an airtight container, offering a cost-effective and customizable alternative to commercial packets.

The recipe yields enough seasoning for approximately 8 pounds of meat, making it practical for larger cooking projects or batch preparation.
