Homemade Taco Seasoning (No Added Salt)
Description
The taco seasoning is made by combining key dried spices: chili powder provides warmth and mild heat, cumin contributes earthiness, onion and garlic powders add savory depth, while oregano imparts herbaceous notes. Optional cayenne pepper brings a gentle kick, balanced by smoky undertones from smoked paprika and the aromatic sharpness of freshly ground black pepper. Without salt, users can adjust seasoning for dietary needs.
Mixing the ingredients thoroughly by whisking or shaking in a jar ensures even distribution. This blend can be stored airtight in a dark cupboard for up to six months, allowing convenient access for bold taco flavor without prepackaged additives. Use it as a direct substitute for store-bought packets, adding salt as preferred.
Its versatility extends to various Mexican-inspired dishes beyond tacos, including seasoning for beans, rice, or grilled proteins. Making this at home allows tailoring the heat level by adjusting cayenne and salt independently.
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon ground chili powder
- 1 Tablespoon cumin 1 teaspoon
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon oregano dried
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for a little heat
- ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika for regular paprika, use ½ teaspoon
- ⅛ - ¼ teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
Instructions
- In a bowl, add all of the ingredients and whisk or stir until completely incorporated together. Or, shake them together in a jar. Store in an airtight container in a dark cupboard for up to six months.
- Use in place of a taco seasoning packet or in your favorite Mexican-inspired recipes. Add salt to the recipes, to taste.
Notes
- This seasoning mix yields about 3½ tablespoons, roughly equivalent to one store-bought packet, suitable for multiple uses.
- Make larger batches by multiplying the recipe and store in an airtight container for up to six months for convenience.
- Adjust the cayenne amount according to your heat preference or omit for milder flavor.
- Add salt directly to dishes as desired since the blend contains no salt, offering control over sodium intake.
