How to Boil Potatoes in Instant Pot?

This method explains how to boil russet potatoes in an Instant Pot using a trivet and 1 cup of water. Cooking times vary by potato size from 8 to 15 minutes, allowing evenly cooked potatoes with tender flesh. The potatoes are steamed under pressure and then pressure is released naturally or quickly depending on your timing needs. Removing them promptly stops extra cooking.

Description

The process for boiling potatoes in the Instant Pot starts by cleaning the potatoes and adding 1 cup of water to the Instant Pot insert. A trivet is placed inside, and the potatoes rest on top, ensuring they are not submerged. The pot is sealed, and the pressure cooker is set to steam at high pressure for a time adjusted to the potato size—typically about 10 minutes for 7-ounce russets.

Once the cooking cycle ends, the pressure can release naturally or be quick-released after 10 minutes if in a hurry. The potatoes are then immediately removed to avoid overcooking. This approach yields tender potatoes suitable for mashing or other uses without becoming waterlogged or falling apart.

The recipe notes that size affects cook time, so larger potatoes (around 9 ounces) take about 12 minutes. The quantity of potatoes does not change cooking time as long as they are arranged properly on the trivet. This technique saves time and yields consistent results compared to traditional stovetop boiling.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 russet potato about 7oz each
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Clean potatoes with water. Add 1 cup water in the instant pot steel insert. Place trivet and place potatoes on top of the trivet. Close lid with vent in sealing position.
  2. Pressure cook on Steam mode at high pressure for 10 mins. (see notes for cooking time variation)
  3. When the instant pot beeps, let the pressure release naturally. If in a hurry, you can release pressure 10 minutes after the beep.
  4. Remove the potatoes from the instant pot to stop additional cooking.

Notes

  • Adjust Instant Pot cooking time between 8 to 15 minutes depending on the size of potatoes used.
  • For larger potatoes around 9 ounces each, increase cooking time to about 12 minutes.
  • Cooking time remains consistent regardless of number of potatoes, focus on size for timing adjustments.
  • Remove potatoes immediately after pressure release to prevent overcooking.
