KFC Coleslaw Recipe
Description
KFC Coleslaw Recipe combines a blend of finely chopped cabbage, carrots, and onions with a creamy dressing. The dressing uses mayonnaise, milk thickened with white vinegar to simulate buttermilk, sugar, salt, and freshly ground black pepper to deliver a balanced flavor profile. Mixing the coleslaw mix with the dressing and chilling it for at least two hours allows the flavors to meld and the texture to soften slightly without losing the crunch of the vegetables.
The coleslaw has a creamy, slightly sweet, and tangy flavor from the vinegar and sugar, complemented by the mild heat of freshly ground pepper. The finely chopped vegetables provide a tender yet crisp bite, which contrasts well with rich or fried dishes.
This coleslaw is commonly served chilled as a side to grilled meats, fried chicken, or sandwiches. It can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for a few days, though it is best consumed within a couple of days to maintain texture and freshness. If left out at room temperature for more than two hours, it should be discarded due to food safety concerns related to mayonnaise-based dressings.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup milk
- 3 tablespoons white vinegar
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- 16 ounces coleslaw mix finely chopped (see note 1)
- 2 tablespoons onion minced
Instructions
- In a small bowl, add milk and white vinegar. Set aside to thicken at least 10 minutes.
- In a large bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sugar, salt, pepper, and thickened milk (buttermilk).
- Add coleslaw mix and onion, then stir to combine. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours to blend flavors. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Notes
- For best texture, finely chop the coleslaw mix or shred your own cabbage and carrot to about similar small pieces.
- Refrigerate the salad at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to develop fully.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge; consume within 4 days although quality declines after 2 days.
- Do not leave coleslaw out at room temperature over 2 hours to avoid bacterial growth.
