Mala Tater Tots

Mala Tater Tots are crispy tater tots tossed in a fragrant mixture of garlic, minced Thai chili, and bold mala spice blend, then garnished with fresh green onions and cilantro. Baking the tots until crisp before coating them with aromatic, spicy seasonings results in a snack with crunchy texture and a numbing, spicy flavor characteristic of mala seasoning. This dish offers a playful twist on classic tater tots with bold Asian-inspired spices.

Description

This recipe starts by baking store-bought tater tots according to package directions to achieve a crisp exterior. While the tots bake, garlic and minced Thai chili are sautéed in vegetable oil to release their aroma and heat. Then the baked tots are added to the pan and gently tossed with the garlic and chili mixture alongside a generous amount of mala spice mix, which typically combines Sichuan peppercorns and chili for a distinctive numbing and spicy flavor. Garnishes of chopped green onions and cilantro add freshness and color when served immediately, preserving crispness and heat.
