Maple Cranberry Sauce

This Maple Cranberry Sauce combines fresh or frozen cranberries simmered with pure maple syrup, fresh orange zest and juice, and a touch of cinnamon. The sauce thickens as the cranberries burst during cooking, resulting in a tangy yet sweet compote with warm citrus notes. It’s a versatile condiment for holiday meals or anytime you want a flavorful cranberry side without the overwhelming sweetness of traditional recipes.

Description

The Maple Cranberry Sauce brings together fresh cranberries cooked down with maple syrup and the bright flavors of orange zest and juice. As the cranberries soften and pop during simmering, they release their natural tartness which is balanced by the maple's sweetness. Ground cinnamon adds a gentle warmth to the sauce, rounding the flavor profile. The mixture cooks to a thick compote consistency that sets further after cooling, making it ideal for serving alongside roasted meats or breads.

Making this sauce ahead is convenient since it strengthens in flavor as it chills. The method uses simple simmering without sugar granules, relying entirely on maple syrup and citrus to provide sweetness, offering a nuanced alternative to classic cranberry sauces.

You can store the sauce refrigerated for up to 10 days or freeze it for up to four months without losing texture or flavor quality, making it a practical addition to holiday meal prep or everyday use.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 12 ounces Cranberry fresh or frozen
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • orange zest of 1 medium
  • orange juice of 1 medium
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Place the cranberries in a colander and rinse with cold water. Discard any shriveled or damaged cranberries.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the cranberries, maple syrup, orange zest, orange juice, and water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then lower the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries have broken down and thickened into a compote, about 20 minutes. The cranberries will pop, don't be scared:) The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
  3. Remove the cranberry sauce from the heat and stir in the cinnamon. Let cool completely at room temperature, then transfer to a bowl to chill in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • This sauce can be prepared several days in advance and refrigerated for up to 10 days.
  • For longer storage, freeze in an airtight container for up to 4 months.
  • Use fresh or frozen cranberries for similar results; rinse well and discard any damaged berries before cooking.
