Mexican Hot Dog Recipe

The Mexican Hot Dog Recipe features grilled hot dogs topped with caramelized onions seasoned with cumin and oregano, a creamy elote-inspired mayonnaise with cotija cheese and elote seasoning, sweet corn, and pickled jalapeños. The combination provides layers of smoky, savory, creamy, and spicy flavors all nestled in a warm bun.

Description

This recipe starts by cooking thinly sliced onions in avocado oil, first over medium-high heat then simmered with cumin and oregano until caramelized. An elote-style mayonnaise is made by combining mayonnaise, cotija cheese, and elote seasoning. Hot dogs are grilled until slightly charred and fully cooked, then placed in buns warmed on the grill. The buns are spread with the elote mayonnaise, topped with the caramelized onions, sweet corn kernels, and pickled jalapeños, creating a layered and texturally interesting sandwich.

The flavors balance well with the smoky grilled hot dog and the creamy, tangy mayo contrasted by the spicy jalapeños, making it suitable for a casual lunch or backyard meal.

Elote seasoning can be made at home with a blend of paprika, cumin, chili powder, coconut sugar, and a squeeze of lime juice, or substituted with similar spices as desired.

  • This seasoning mix enhances the mayonnaise to capture traditional Mexican elote flavors in the hot dog topping.
