Orange Sauce
Description
The sauce begins by simmering orange juice, white and brown sugars, rice vinegar, soy sauce, minced fresh ginger, finely diced garlic, and red pepper flakes together, infusing the liquid with aromatic warmth and balanced heat. A cornstarch slurry is added to thicken the mixture, creating a glossy consistency suitable as a glaze or dipping sauce.
Finishing with fresh orange zest adds fragrant oils and a fresh citrus brightness that enhances complexity. The sauce’s sweet and savory profile with subtle heat makes it versatile for glazing meats, vegetables, or as a flavorful accompaniment. The cooking method ensures the raw pungency of garlic and ginger mellows while retaining vibrancy.
Ingredients
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon ginger minced, fresh
- 2 cloves garlic finely diced
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 orange zested
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
Instructions
- Add orange juice, white and brown sugar, rice vinegar, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, and red chili flakes in a medium saucepan. Stir and cook over medium heat for 3 minutes.
- In a small bowl, whisk one tablespoon of cornstarch with two tablespoons of water to form a slurry. The cornstarch should be fully dissolved.
- Add the slurry to the orange sauce and whisk together. Cook for 5 minutes until the mixture begins to thicken.
- Once the sauce has thickened, remove from heat and stir in orange zest.
