Oven Baked Potatoes - The Battle of The Spuds

This recipe for Oven Baked Potatoes involves baking whole, scrubbed potatoes wrapped in foil with butter and sea salt. The slow bake at moderate temperature produces tender potatoes with soft interiors. After baking, the potatoes are split open and topped with butter, crème fraîche or sour cream, cheddar cheese, crispy bacon, and chives for a flavorful loaded baked potato experience with optional blue or goat cheese and green onions.

Description

Oven Baked Potatoes - The Battle of The Spuds uses whole potatoes washed and pricked with a fork, rubbed with butter and sea salt, then wrapped in foil and baked directly on the oven rack. The baking at 375°F for 45 to 60 minutes renders the potatoes soft and tender inside, perfect for scooping out and topping.

The traditional toppings include unsalted butter, crème fraîche or sour cream, grated cheddar cheese, crisp chopped bacon, fresh chives, and seasoning with salt and black pepper. Optional toppings such as blue or goat cheese and green onions add more flavor variations. Once baked, the potatoes are cut halfway and squeezed from the ends to fluff the interior before adding toppings.

This method yields potatoes with a delicate skin and creamy flesh suitable as a side or a main component. The variety of toppings creates a rich and savory option that can be customized to taste.
