Philadelphia Roll
Description
The Philadelphia Roll combines cooked sushi rice with classic fillings of Philadelphia cream cheese, smoked salmon strips, and thin cucumber strips, all wrapped inside nori seaweed sheets. Cooking the sushi rice properly using a tested recipe and cooling it thoroughly before assembly helps prevent sogginess. The spread of rice over nori leaves part uncovered to allow the roll to seal tightly after rolling.
The roll is formed using a bamboo mat to tightly encase the ingredients, ensuring a good shape for slicing. Wetting the knife before cutting helps maintain clean slices without the rice sticking. The fillings provide a contrast in texture and flavor: the cream cheese adds creaminess, smoked salmon brings a smoky and savory flavor, and cucumber contributes fresh crunch.
The rolls can be finished with sesame seeds or served as is, usually sliced into 10 pieces, making for a popular sushi choice. Paying attention to the order of layering, moistening the edges, and the rice to nori side helps achieve a well-formed roll suitable for presentation and eating.
Ingredients
- 200 g sushi rice cooked
- 2 heet nori
- 100 g cream cheese Philadelphia brand
- 60 g smoked salmon cut into thin strips
- 0.25 cucumber cut into thin strips
Instructions
- Cook your sushi rice according to our Sushi Rice recipe.
- Lay a sheet of nori on a bamboo rolling mat, shiny side down. Put the cooked sushi rice onto the nori and spread to cover ¾ of the nori.
- Carefully spoon the cream cheese along the centre of the rice. Lay the strips of cucumber and smoked salmon on top.
- Using a rolling mat, roll up from the bottom, tightly away from you. Leave a small amount of nori unrolled. Wet this part of the nori with water.
- Roll again to seal it.
- Dip a sharp knife into some water and then slice the roll. Dip the knife into water each time you make a cut. Slice the roll into 10 pieces.
Notes
- For 200g cooked sushi rice, start with approximately 70g of raw rice and adjust according to serving size.
- Wet the knife before each cut to prevent rice from sticking for clean slices.
