Pigs in a Blanket
Description
The recipe uses crescent roll dough cut into narrow strips to wrap around mini hot dogs, which may be stuffed with a small piece of American cheese for added richness. Baking at 400°F produces a golden, crisp exterior while keeping the hot dogs juicy. Rolling the dough point-side-down helps maintain shape during baking. The result is a tender, flaky pastry casing with a savory sausage center.
These snacks are suitable for serving warm or at room temperature shortly after baking. The option to omit cheese offers a simpler flavor. For leftover storage, refrigeration in an airtight container preserves quality for up to three days. The dough-wrapped sausages can also be assembled and frozen on a baking sheet before transferring to freezer containers for up to three months. Baking from frozen requires slightly longer cooking time at the same temperature to ensure thorough heat.
They are versatile snacks often served with condiments like ketchup and mustard and are convenient for parties or casual meals. Adjusting the size of sausages and dough portions allows making full-size hot dog versions. The baking instructions and dough preparation create an easy-to-prepare snack with familiar ingredients.
Ingredients
- 28 ounce mini hot dogs cocktail franks or "Lil Smokies"
- 2 crescent rolls packages
- American cheese optional, sliced
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet.
- Unroll the crescent rolls, separate the triangles, and then using a pastry cutter or pizza cutter, slice each triangle into three strips.
- If you are using cheese, cut a slit into the center of a mini hot dog and place a small piece of cheese into the slit.
- Place a mini hot dog on the wide end of the strip and roll up. Place point-side-down on the prepared baking sheet and repeat with the rest of the crescent rolls (you may have leftover mini hot dogs).
- Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve plain or with ketchup and mustard on the side. These are best served warm or at room temperature the day they are made, but leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Notes
- Use regular hot dogs and full crescent roll triangles to make full-size pigs in a blanket.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days to maintain freshness.
- To freeze, assemble pigs in a blanket on a baking sheet, freeze until firm, then transfer to freezer-safe containers for up to three months.
- Bake from frozen at 400°F for about 25 minutes until golden and crispy.
- Reheat baked leftovers at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes before serving.
