Poached Pears in Wine (Easy 3 Ingredient Recipe)

Poached Pears in Wine is a dessert that features firm pears simmered gently in a mixture of wine and sugar until tender yet still holds shape. The process develops a delicate balance between the natural sweetness of the pears and the enriched flavor of the wine syrup, which caramelizes at the end to form a glossy drizzle. The recipe’s minimal ingredients and straightforward cooking steps make it an approachable option for showcasing pears with a wine-poached twist.

Description

Poached Pears in Wine (Easy 3 Ingredient Recipe) highlights the natural texture and flavor of firm pears gently cooked in a wine and sugar base. The pears are peeled, halved, and cored before being placed cut-side down in a sauté pan with wine and sugar. Simmering them with the lid on cooks them through while keeping the fruit intact and firm to the touch. Briefly turning the pears to cook on the other side ensures even softness.

After removing the pears, the cooking liquid is heated further to reduce into a syrup with a rich, caramelized sweetness that complements the pear’s subtle flavor. Serving the pears with this syrup on top enhances the mouthfeel and adds a pleasant shine. The poaching liquid can be either red or white dry wine, depending on the flavor preference.

This dessert can be plated simply or garnished as desired for visual appeal. Its restrained ingredient list and technique allow the quality and texture of the pears to come through, making it a pleasing finish to a meal without being overly complex or heavy.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 pear firm, organic
  • 1 ¼ cups wine red or white, dry
  • ¾ cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Peel, halve (lengthwise) and core four pears and place cut side down in sauté pan.
  2. Pour wine into pan with the pears. Next, add the sugar.
  3. Put burner on to medium high heat and bring to a simmer, then add the lid.
  4. Cook for a few minutes until the pears are still firm, but cooked (poke with a skewer to test them.) Turn them over and cook for one more minute.
  5. Take the pan off the heat and remove the pears from the liquid in the pan with a large spoon (slotted is best) and set aside.
  6. Put the pan back onto the burner and bring to a strong simmer over medium high heat. Cook until a syrup forms, then remove from heat immediately after consistency is reached.
  7. Place pear halves (one or two) on serving plates and drizzle with the caramelized wine syrup. Decorate as desired, or not at all, and serve right away.

Notes

  • The amount of ingredients is flexible and not strictly critical to the final result.
  • Firm pears like Bosc work particularly well but other firm varieties are suitable.
  • A sauté pan with a lid is needed to cover and simmer the pears evenly.
