Pumpkin Butter

Pumpkin Butter is a smooth, spiced spread made from pumpkin puree combined with maple syrup, coconut sugar, and warm spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg. Prepared either in the microwave or on the stovetop, it develops a rich, concentrated flavor ideal for spreading over toast or incorporating into recipes. The spread maintains a thick but spreadable consistency and can be stored refrigerated for up to two weeks.

Description

This Pumpkin Butter recipe involves blending pumpkin puree with natural sweeteners including maple syrup and coconut sugar alongside a blend of aromatic spices: cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg. The preparation can be accomplished quickly in the microwave, cooking the mixture in stages to develop flavor and reduce moisture, or on the stovetop with gentle simmering for about 20 minutes to achieve a similar effect.

The result is a smooth, deeply flavored butter with a balanced sweetness and spice that highlights pumpkin’s inherent earthiness. Texture is thick enough to spread easily without being runny. The spices can be substituted with premixed pumpkin pie spice for convenience. Replacing water with unsweetened almond milk can add creaminess if desired.

Pumpkin Butter complements breads, pancakes, and oatmeal and serves as a seasonal flavor enhancer. The recipe allows flexibility in sweetener choice, interchangeably using honey, agave nectar, brown sugar, or granulated sugar to suit pantry availability.

Leftovers should be refrigerated in an airtight container and consumed within two weeks to maintain freshness and safety.

STOVE TOP:

  1. Add all ingredients to a saucepan or pot and stir to combine over medium-high heat.
  2. Once it starts boiling, reduce heat to low and bring to a simmer.
  3. Cook uncovered for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir, let cool and enjoy!
  4. Place leftovers in an air-tight container or jar and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

  • You can replace the individual spices with 1 1/4 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice for convenience.
  • If out of maple syrup, substitute honey or agave nectar for similar natural sweetness.
  • Coconut sugar can be swapped with brown sugar or regular granulated sugar if needed.
  • To achieve a creamier texture, replace water with unsweetened almond or other plant-based milk.
