Rapid Rise Skillet Rolls
Description
Rapid Rise Skillet Rolls combine warm water, instant dry yeast, honey, melted butter, salt, and an egg to form a soft dough. Gradually adding flour results in a dough that pulls away from the bowl sides but stays soft and workable. After shaping into 12 rolls arranged in a skillet, they rise for about 20 minutes until doubled. Baking at 400°F yields golden-brown rolls with a slightly sweet taste from the honey and a tender texture thanks to the butter and egg.
The skillet method allows for even heat distribution, contributing to a nicely browned crust. These rolls work well as a side for meals or for sandwiches, offering a homemade touch without the usual extended preparation time.
The recipe notes mention that if a skillet is unavailable, a 9x13 pan can be substituted, though baking time may be a bit longer. This flexibility makes the recipe accessible for various kitchens.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon instant dry yeast
- 1 cup water 100-110℉, warm
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup butter melted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 tablespoon instant dry yeast, 1 cup warm water, and 1/4 cup honey. Add 1/4 cup melted butter, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 large egg. Stir until the mixture is fully combined.
- Gradually add 2 1/2 to 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup at a time, stirring after each addition, until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. The exact amount of flour you add will vary. The dough should be soft but not sticky.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape them into rolls. Place them in a 12-inch cast iron skillet, leaving a bit of space between each roll.
- Cover the skillet with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 20 minutes, or until the rolls have doubled in size.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
- If desired, brush the tops of the rolls with an additional tablespoon of melted butter right after removing them from the oven.
Notes
- If you don't have a cast iron skillet, bake the rolls in a greased 9x13-inch pan and add a few extra minutes to the baking time.
