Sabrett Onions in Sauce

Sabrett Onions in Sauce are made by softening thinly sliced onions in olive oil, then simmering them in a mixture of water, tomato paste, corn syrup, cornstarch, red pepper flakes, and vinegar. The slow simmer thickens the sauce and concentrates flavors, resulting in a savory, mildly spicy onion sauce with a slightly tangy finish.

Description

Thinly sliced onions are sautéed in olive oil until soft but not browned. A sauce is created by combining water, tomato paste, corn syrup for sweetness, cornstarch as a thickener, salt, and red pepper flakes for a gentle heat. This mixture is boiled and then simmered for a total of up to 90 minutes to reduce and thicken.

An addition of vinegar near the end introduces a tangy brightness that balances the sweetness and mild spice. The resulting sauce is thickened and flavorful, carrying the softened onions in a richly textured tomato-based sauce.

This sauce is suitable for using as a condiment or accompaniment to various dishes, providing a savory and slightly spicy onion flavor that complements many preparations. The long simmer ensures depth and concentration in taste.
