Simple Guacamole Yucatan Recipe
Description
The Simple Guacamole Yucatan Recipe uses ripe Hass-like avocados mashed with fresh lime juice to prevent browning and add brightness. Salt-marinated diced onions are mixed in for sweetness and texture. Thinly sliced garlic and a pinch of black pepper contribute savory depth while cayenne pepper or small slices of jalapeño provide mild heat. Fresh cilantro is optional and adds herbal freshness when included.
The ingredients are blended into a smooth paste using a pestle and mortar, blender, or food processor, allowing customization of texture. Balancing lime juice avoids excessive acidity, and generous but adjustable salt seasoning enhances the overall flavor. The guacamole’s creamy texture pairs well with a variety of dippers.
This guacamole complements tortillas, vegetable sticks, toast, or other snacks and can be garnished with additional cilantro or kitchen herbs for presentation. For an authentic Yucatan touch, roasting and peeling jalapeños before grinding is recommended to mellow the pepper's heat and deepen flavors.
Ingredients
- 2 avocado medium - large
- ½ onion yellow or red, large
- lime juice juice of two small limes
- black pepper pinch
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper or one small finely sliced jalapeno
- 3 cloves garlic (sliced)
- ¼ cup cilantro optional
- ½ teaspoon salt (or more to taste)
Instructions
- Peel and slice the onion into cubes, mix with salt and let sit.
- De-seed the avocados and scoop out the flesh into a bowl. Immediately add the juice of one lime and mix.
- Add the salted onions, black pepper, cayenne pepper or sliced jalapeno, garlic, and fresh cilantro (optional) to the avocado-lime juice mixture. Stir to combine.
- Using a pestle and mortar, blender, or food processor, process everything to a smooth paste. Add a bit more salt if preferred (see notes below) and some of the remaining lime juice, mix, and taste. You do not necessarily have to use up the juice of both limes as too much lime will result in acidic-tasting guacamole.
- Garnish with some cilantro (coriander) or your favorite kitchen herbs. Serve this copycat Guacamole Yucatan with tortillas, over vegetables, toast, or as you prefer.
Notes
- Use ripe Hass avocados that yield to firm pressure for best texture.
- Control acidity by adding lime juice gradually to avoid an overly sour taste.
- Start with a generous amount of salt and adjust according to taste.
- Optionally, roast and peel jalapeños for a more authentic Yucatan flavor profile.
