Simple Sesame Rice

Simple Sesame Rice is jasmine rice toasted briefly with garlic and butter, then simmered in water with soy sauce for a savory base. After cooking and resting, toasted sesame oil and seeds are folded in to add nutty aroma and flavor. The result is fluffy rice with a subtle garlic and sesame profile that enhances many Asian-inspired meals.

Description

This preparation starts by sautéing minced garlic in butter until fragrant but not browned, infusing the fat with garlic flavor. Jasmine rice is then added and toasted for a few minutes, which builds depth and a nuttier aroma. Water and soy sauce are incorporated before bringing the mixture to a boil, then the heat is lowered for a 15-minute simmer to cook the rice through.

Allowing the rice to rest off the heat with the lid on lets moisture distribute evenly for tender grains. Finally, toasted sesame oil and sesame seeds are gently folded in, adding a toasty, aromatic dimension and subtle crunchy texture. This seasoned rice complements various main dishes and stands well on its own.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 clove garlic $0.08
  • 1 Tbsp butter $0.13
  • 1 cup jasmine rice $0.67, long grain
  • 1.75 cups water $0.00
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce $0.06
  • 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil $0.15, toasted
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds $0.02

Instructions

  1. Mince the garlic and add it to a medium sauce pot with the butter. Sauté the garlic for 1-2 minutes over medium heat, or just until the garlic begins to soften and becomes very fragrant.
  2. Add the rice to the pot and continue to stir and cook for 2-3 minutes more to toast the rice.
  3. Carefully add the water and soy sauce, then give the pot a brief stir to combine. Place a lid on the pot, turn the heat up to high, and allow it to come to a full boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
  4. After 15 minutes, turn the heat off and let the rice rest, undisturbed and with the lid in place, for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork. Drizzle the toasted sesame oil over top, add the sesame seeds, and gently fold the rice until the sesame oil and seeds are distributed throughout. Serve warm.
