Slow Cooker Ribs Recipe
Description
This recipe prepares whole racks of baby back ribs seasoned with a robust dry rub consisting of paprika, kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, brown sugar, and Tabasco sauce. The ribs are rubbed thoroughly on both sides after membrane removal to ensure deep seasoning. They then cook low and slow in a slow cooker for 7 to 8 hours or on high for 4 hours, allowing the meat to tenderize and absorb the rub's flavors fully.
After slow cooking, the ribs are removed and brushed generously with a homemade or store-bought BBQ sauce featuring ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, and spices. A quick broil for 1-2 minutes caramelizes the sauce, creating a glossy, slightly charred crust that contrasts with the tender meat inside. The combination of the dry rub, slow cooking, and finishing under the broiler produces ribs that are flavorful, moist, and easy to cut.
The recipe also includes instructions for making the BBQ sauce from scratch and the dry rub seasoning. This meal serves as a satisfying main dish for gatherings or family dinners, accompanied by classic BBQ sides.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup rib dry rub , recipe below
- 2 baby back ribs whole racks
- 2 cups BBQ sauce , (recipe below or store-bought)
Instructions
- Rub the dry rub all over the front and back of the ribs.
- Cook on low for 7-8 hours (I do 7) or high for 4 hours.
- While the ribs are cooking make your bbq sauce.
- Remove from the slow cooker, place racks onto baking sheet, brush with bbq sauce and broil in your oven for 1-2 minutes until caramelized on the top rack then serve with additional bbq sauce.
Notes
- Remove the rib membrane before applying the dry rub to improve flavor penetration and texture.
- The homemade BBQ sauce simmers for 45 minutes for deeper flavor; store any leftovers refrigerated.
- Broiling the ribs after slow cooking caramelizes the sauce for added texture and enhances taste.
- Cooking times vary: low for 7-8 hours yields very tender ribs; high setting for 4 hours offers a faster option.
