Sopapillas

Report
Sopapillas are puffy fried dough squares with a light golden exterior and soft, airy interior. Made from simple ingredients like flour, sugar, and shortening, the dough is rested and rolled before frying in hot oil. They are typically served warm and topped with honey, offering a sweet, crisp treat that complements a variety of meals or serves as dessert.

Description

The Sopapillas recipe combines basic pantry ingredients into a dough that rests to develop elasticity before frying. The frying process at about 350°F creates a golden, slightly crispy outside while keeping the inside tender and pillowy. Cutting the dough into small squares ensures even cooking and a satisfying bite size.

Once fried, sopapillas drain on paper towels to remove excess oil and are often drizzled generously with honey for sweetness. This snack or dessert highlights a contrast between the crunchy fried exterior and the soft, warm center.

Dusting with powdered sugar can be done for extra sweetness and visual appeal. They are best enjoyed fresh to preserve the light texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup water warm
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • honey for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl mix together the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder.  Then add in the shortening and use your hands to mix the shortening into the flour mixture.
  2. Then gradually pour the warm water into the bowl and work the dough with your hands until all the water has been added.
  3. Cover the dough and let the dough rest for 20-30 minutes.
  4. While the dough is resting, heat 3 inches of oil in a deep pot to approximately 350 degrees F.
  5. Then roll the dough out into approximately 1/4 inch thick on a lightly floured surface.  Then cut the dough into approximately 3 inch squares. I find that it’s easiest to use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into smaller pieces.
  6. Then place the squares into the oil (3-5 at a time depending on the size of your pot).  Fry for 1-2 minutes per side (use tongs to flip the dough) until they are a light golden brown.
  7. After the cook time, move the sopapillas to a plate covered in a paper towel.
  8. Repeat the process with all the remaining dough.
  9. Serve warm drizzled with honey and enjoy!

Notes

  • Dust sopapillas with powdered sugar before serving for an additional touch of sweetness.
