Spicy Baked Feta (Feta Psiti)

Spicy Baked Feta, or Feta Psiti, bakes a block of feta cheese atop a bed of sliced tomatoes, red onion, green pepper, and Kalamata olives, seasoned with oregano, chili flakes, black pepper, and olive oil. Covered and then uncovered during baking, it creates a soft, flavorful cheese dish with roasted vegetables and spice.

Description

Spicy Baked Feta (Feta Psiti) begins by layering sliced tomatoes, green bell pepper, red onion, and Kalamata olives in a foil-lined baking dish with black pepper and olive oil. A feta block is then placed over the vegetables and sprinkled with dried oregano, chili flakes, black pepper, and additional olive oil. The dish is covered tightly with foil and baked at 220°C (430°F) for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse and the vegetables to soften. The foil is then removed, and baking continues uncovered for another 10 minutes, permitting the feta to brown slightly and soften further.

The cheese becomes creamy and warm while absorbing the savory, spicy notes from the chili flakes and oregano. The roasted vegetables soften, releasing their juices which mingle with the feta and olives, creating a balance of tart, spicy, and earthy tastes.

This baked feta works well as a mezze dish to accompany bread or as a flavorful component in Mediterranean-style meals. It can be served warm to scoop with bread or crackers.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 250 g feta cheese
  • 1 tomato
  • ½ red onion
  • ½ green bell pepper or Italian pepper
  • kalamata olives black, a handful
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes
  • black pepper
  • olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 220C / 430F
  2. Place some tin foil paper on a baking dish. The tin foil paper should be cut double the size than the dish, as you will need to cover the dish as well. Slice the tomatoes, green pepper and red onion.
  3. Cover the bottom of the dish with the sliced tomatoes, sliced green peppers, sliced red onions, black olives, some black pepper and olive oil.
  4. Place the feta block on the top of the veggies and add on the top of the feta the oregano, chilli flakes, black pepper and drizzle some more olive oil.
  5. Cover with the tin foil paper on the sides and bake for about 10 minutes at 220C / 430F. Uncover the feta cheese, opening the tin foil paper, and cook for further 10 minutes.
