Stuffed Pizza Burger
Description
This recipe starts by mixing Italian seasoning with ground beef, then dividing it into portions to form four burgers. Each burger is built by making two thinner patties; cheese slices are placed on one patty, then topped with the other. The edges are crimped to fully enclose the cheese. The patties can be chilled briefly to firm up before cooking.
Cooking takes place on a hot skillet, with patties browned on each side and cooked through to a safe internal temperature, approximately five minutes per side. Once cooked, the patties are topped with pizza sauce and can be served on hamburger buns for a handheld, pizza-inspired burger experience.
This method infuses the familiar flavors of Italian seasoning, melted cheese, and pizza sauce within a ground beef burger format. The sealed cheese center prevents leakage during cooking, providing a molten cheese surprise when bitten into. The recipe’s flexibility allows for substitution of Italian herbs if needed.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning see note
- 3-4 ounces provolone cheese or mozarella
- ½ cup pizza sauce
- 4 Hamburger Bun
Instructions
- Mix the seasoning with the beef.
- Divide ground beef into 4 pieces for 4 burgers. Divide each section into two and form a top and bottom patty for each burger.
- Place cheese in the center of 4 patties, avoiding the edges. Top these with the 4 remaining patties, herb-side in. Crimp edges to seal. Optionally, place patties in the freezer for a few minutes while pan heats.
- Heat a large skillet until drops of water sizzle when sprinkled inside. Cook patties until brown on bottom, then flip and continue cooking until inside of patties reaches 165 F on an instant read thermometer, about 5 minutes per side.
- Top with pizza sauce and serve on a bun or off.
Notes
- Italian seasoning can be substituted with a blend of ½ teaspoon each of basil, oregano, thyme, and marjoram to match flavor profiles.
