Stuffing Recipe

This Stuffing Recipe features a blend of sautéed onions, celery, and poultry seasoning mixed with dried bread cubes soaked in chicken broth. Baking the mixture yields a golden crust with a moist, flavorful interior seasoned with sage and fresh parsley, enhanced by dotting with butter before baking. It's a classic side dish that balances tender vegetables and seasoned bread, suitable to accompany poultry dinners or holiday meals. Properly dried bread cubes prevent sogginess and allow the broth to fully absorb, ensuring the right stuffing texture.

Description

Stuffing Recipe combines diced yellow onion and celery sautéed in butter with poultry seasoning and sage, stirred into dried bread cubes with egg, salt, pepper, and parsley. Chicken broth moistens the mix before baking in a butter-dotted dish until golden and set. The onion and celery soften during cooking, releasing flavor into the butter, which then infuses the bread cubes. Baking with foil keeps the stuffing moist while initial covered baking ensures thorough cooking, with uncovered final baking providing a light crust. This recipe yields a classic stuffing texture that avoids sogginess by starting with properly dried bread cubes.

The flavors are subtle with earthy poultry seasoning and sage complementing the fresh onion and celery. Texturally, the stuffing has a tender crumb with a slight crisp edge after baking. It pairs well as a side dish for roasted or baked poultry and other holiday entrees, adding a seasoned bread component to the meal.

The recipe benefits from pre-cooking the vegetables to enhance flavor and ensure softness. Using dried bread cubes is important to prevent an overly wet stuffing; homemade drying by cubing and toasting bread is an effective method if store-bought dried cubes are unavailable. The dish is best baked fresh and not prepared far in advance to maintain texture and flavor.

  6. Bake for 35 minutes. Remove from oven, uncover and bake an additional 10 minutes or until golden brown and set in the middle.

Notes

  • Use dried bread cubes to avoid soggy stuffing; toast fresh bread cubes at 300°F for about 10 minutes if needed.
  • Pre-cook onions and celery in butter to develop flavor and achieve tender texture.
  • Prepare the vegetable mixture up to a day ahead and refrigerate, but add broth and assemble just before baking for safety and best results.
