Sweet Potato Hash Browns

Sweet Potato Hash Browns are grated sweet potatoes salted and chilled, then squeezed dry and pan-fried in butter until golden and crisp. The dish yields crispy edges and tender centers, accented with the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes. Garnished with flaky sea salt, pepper, and fresh chives, these hash browns offer a satisfying texture and balanced flavor suitable for breakfast or as a side dish. The process ensures reduced moisture for crispness and rich buttery browning.

Description

This recipe for Sweet Potato Hash Browns starts with peeling and grating a large sweet potato followed by tossing the shreds in kosher salt and chilling them uncovered for an hour. This step helps draw out excess moisture from the potatoes. After chilling, the grated potatoes are wrung tightly in a tea towel to remove as much liquid as possible, which is crucial for achieving a crispy texture when cooked.

The hash browns are cooked in batches in butter on medium-high heat until browned on each side, roughly 3 minutes per side. Cooking in two batches with fresh butter keeps the browned crust rich and flavorful. The final dish is garnished with Maldon sea salt flakes, ground black pepper, and chopped chives to finish with a seasoning contrast and fresh herb note.

Sweet Potato Hash Browns provide a hearty and textured alternative to traditional hash browns with a natural sweetness and crispness from proper moisture removal and butter frying. They work well as a breakfast side or accompaniment to eggs and other morning dishes.
