Taco Bell Cinnamon Twists

Taco Bell Cinnamon Twists are light, crispy snacks made by frying spiraled duros in hot oil until they puff up, then coating them generously in a cinnamon sugar mixture. The twists have a crunchy texture with a sweet cinnamon flavor, replicating the fast-food treat at home. They are best enjoyed fresh and warm for maximum crispiness.

Description

This recipe starts with seasoning sugar and ground cinnamon mixed together. The duros, which are spiral-shaped fried snacks made from wheat flour, are heated in vegetable oil at 350°F. They initially remain unchanged but quickly puff up within seconds. Frying is brief, about 5 seconds after puffing, to achieve a crisp texture without absorbing excess oil.

Once removed from the oil and drained, the hot twists are immediately tossed or sprinkled with the cinnamon sugar mixture to ensure the coating adheres well. The resulting snack is crunchy and sweet with a pleasant cinnamon aroma. The process is straightforward but requires careful temperature control for proper puffing and crisping.

If a deep fryer is not available, frying in a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven with oil temperature monitored by a candy or deep-fry thermometer achieves similar results.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • 4 ounces duros spiral-shaped

Instructions

  1. Combine the sugar and cinnamon in a bowl and stir.
  2. Heat the oil to 350°F in a deep fryer.
  3. Place the duros into the fryer, about 15 at a time. Nothing will happen for the first few seconds. Then they will suddenly puff up. Continue cooking for 5 seconds after they have puffed up.
  4. Remove the duros from the oil and transfer them to a wire rack to drain.
  5. Sprinkle the duros liberally with cinnamon and sugar.

Notes

  • If you lack a deep fryer, use a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven and monitor oil temperature carefully with a thermometer.
  • Maintain the oil temperature at 350°F for consistent puffing and crispiness.
  • Work in batches to avoid overcrowding and ensure even frying of the duros.
