Teriyaki Chicken Wings

These Teriyaki Chicken Wings feature a crisp coating of potato starch seasoned with garlic and onion powders and are baked to a golden finish. The wings are glazed in a homemade teriyaki sauce combining soy sauce, honey, orange juice, garlic, and mirin, yielding a balanced blend of savory, sweet, and citrus notes. Toasted sesame seeds and green onions add texture and fresh flavor to this appealing appetizer or snack.

Description

Teriyaki Chicken Wings begin with patting dry the wings and coating them evenly with a mixture of potato starch, garlic powder, and onion powder. Baking at high temperature crisps the exterior without frying. The teriyaki sauce is prepared separately by simmering soy sauce, honey, orange juice, garlic, and mirin until thickened to a honey-like glaze. This sauce can be thickened faster by adding cornstarch before boiling.

After baking, the wings are tossed with the warm teriyaki glaze allowing each wing to be evenly coated. Garnishing with toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onions adds a nutty crunch and fresh, sharp notes that complement the rich sauced wings. This recipe offers a balance of textures from the crispy wings and sticky sauce, with flavors that combine savory, sweet, and citrus.

These wings work well as a finger food for casual meals or parties and can be served alongside rice or vegetables for a fuller meal. The cooking method provides a less oily alternative to frying while maintaining a satisfying crispy exterior.

Ingredients

Servings
  • lb chicken wings
  • 4 tbsp potato starch
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup honey
  • ½ cup orange juice or pineapple juice
  • 2 tbsp garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp mirin

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 450F.
  2. Pat dry the chicken wings with a paper towel if they are moist.
  3. Mix together the potato starch, garlic powder, and onion powder before coating the chicken wings in them.
  4. Place the chicken wings in a single layer on a parchment-lined sheet pan and spray the tops of the chicken with some cooking oil.
  5. Decrease the oven temperature to 425F and bake the chicken wings for 40 minutes, flipping at the half way mark.
  6. While the wings are baking, in a saucepan, combine the soy sauce, honey, orange juice, garlic, and mirin. Bring it to a boil and simmer until it has thickened to the consistency of honey. You can add a tablespoon of cornstarch to the mixture before bringing it to a boil if you want to cut down on simmering time.
  7. Once the wings are done, transfer them to a large bowl and add the teriyaki sauce a few tablespoons at a time until the wings are all coated. Top with some toasted sesame seed and green onions as a garnish before serving.
