Tex Mex Chili Gravy Enchilada Sauce

This Tex Mex Chili Gravy Enchilada Sauce is a spiced, thickened sauce made by blending a roux of oil and flour with a mix of chili powder, cumin, garlic, onion powder, and oregano, then simmered with beef broth and tomato paste. It provides a richly flavored, smooth sauce suitable for enchiladas or similar dishes.

Description

The Tex Mex Chili Gravy Enchilada Sauce starts with heating oil or butter and stirring in flour to create a roux that thickens the sauce. The spices including black pepper, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, oregano, and chili powder are added to develop a flavorful paste. Beef broth and tomato paste are incorporated to form a smooth sauce, which is gently heated until it thickens slightly. The slow combination of these ingredients yields a balanced sauce with a rich, mildly spicy character characteristic of Tex-Mex cuisine.

This sauce is ideal for pouring over enchiladas, adding moisture and flavor to the dish. Its texture allows it to coat fillings and tortillas well while enhancing the overall taste. It is designed to be stored in the refrigerator and can also be frozen in portioned bags for convenience.

The sauce is simple but versatile, with seasoning levels adjustable by controlling broth sodium and salt addition as desired.
