Thousand Island Dressing
Description
This Thousand Island Dressing blends mayonnaise and ketchup as the base, enriched with sweet pickle relish and minced hard-boiled egg for texture and mild savory depth. Fresh onion, parsley, lemon juice, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper round out the flavor profile, providing brightness and subtle smokiness. The smooth, creamy dressing has a balanced tang and a hint of sweetness from the ketchup and relish.
The dressing can be served immediately but developing the flavors in the refrigerator for several hours enhances its character. It keeps well refrigerated for up to a week, making it convenient to prepare ahead. It's suitable as a salad dressing, sandwich spread, or dip depending on preference.
Using fresh lemon juice instead of bottled adds zesty brightness. Choosing full-fat mayonnaise increases richness, though lighter versions may be used. Check your smoked paprika for freshness to ensure proper aroma and flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 2 Tablespoon sweet pickle relish or finely chopped pickle
- 1 egg minced or pressed through a sieve, hard-boiled
- 1 Tablespoon onion minced
- 2 teaspoon parsley finely chopped, fresh
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, pickle relish, egg, onion, parsley and lemon juice and seasonings in a mixing bowl and blend well. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed. Add more chopped pickle and lemon juice as desired.
- You can serve the dressing immediately, but it tastes even better if refrigerated in a covered container for several hours. It will keep for about 5-7 days in the refrigerator.
Notes
- Use fresh lemon juice rather than bottled for brighter, more vibrant flavor.
- Check smoked paprika freshness by crushing a small amount to ensure it releases aroma; stale paprika should be replaced.
- Full-fat mayonnaise lends a richer taste, but you can substitute with low-fat or non-fat varieties if preferred.
