Tiramisu
Description
Tiramisu is assembled by first whipping heavy cream with sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form, then folding in mascarpone cheese to create a smooth creamy filling. Ladyfingers are briefly dipped in a coffee mixture optionally enhanced with coffee-flavored liqueur, then layered in the bottom of a baking dish.
Half the mascarpone mixture is spread over the first layer of soaked ladyfingers; another layer of dipped ladyfingers is added, followed by the remaining cream. A generous dusting of cocoa powder finishes the top before chilling.
The dessert is refrigerated for several hours or overnight to allow the layers to meld and the ladyfingers to soften slightly without becoming soggy. This results in a luscious, creamy texture with balanced bitterness from the coffee and slight sweetness from the cream mixture.
Alcohol adds complexity and enhances coffee flavor but can be omitted. The dessert stores well refrigerated for 2 to 3 days. It also freezes well when covered tightly, with cocoa powder added after thawing.

- 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 8 ounce mascarpone cheese room temperature, container
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups espresso prepared, cold
- 3 Tablespoons coffee flavored liqueur ,optional (Kahlua or DaVinci brands)
- 1 package lady fingers ,Savoiardi brand can be found in the cookie aisle at your local grocery store, or online
- cocoa powder for dusting the top
Instructions
- Add whipping cream to a mixing bowl and beat on medium speed with electric mixers (or use a stand mixer). Slowly add sugar and vanilla and continue to beat until stiff peaks. Add mascarpone cheese and fold in until combined. Set aside.
- Add coffee and liqueur to a shallow bowl. Dip the lady fingers in the coffee (Don't soak them--just quickly dip them on both sides to get them wet) and lay them in a single layer on the bottom of an 8x8'' or similar size pan.
- Smooth half of the mascarpone mixture over the top. Add another layer of dipped lady fingers. Smooth remaining mascarpone cream over the top.
- Dust cocoa powder generously over the top (I use a fine mesh strainer to do this). Refrigerate for at least 3-4 hours or up to overnight before serving.
Notes
- Alcohol such as coffee liqueur enhances coffee flavor but is optional.
- Make ahead by chilling at least 3-4 hours or overnight for best flavor melding.
- Freeze assembled tiramisu without cocoa powder; thaw in the fridge overnight and dust with cocoa before serving.
