Tirokafteri (Spicy Feta Spread)
Description
This spread combines crumbled feta with Greek yogurt and olive oil for creaminess, brightened by red wine vinegar. Chopped green bell pepper adds freshness and mild crunch, while banana pepper brings a sharp, spicy note that gives the spread its characteristic kick. Processing the ingredients creates a mostly smooth texture with some pepper bits remaining.
Tirokafteri works well served at room temperature with warm pita, crusty bread, or as part of a mezze platter. The balance of spicy and creamy elements makes it a versatile condiment.
Using authentic Greek feta and fresh peppers contributes to the best flavor. Storage in the refrigerator is recommended, and the spread keeps well for about a week.
Ingredients
- 16 oz feta cheese (See Note 1)
- 4 tbsp Greek yogurt
- 4 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
- 1 1/2 cups green bell pepper (See Note 2)
- 1 banana pepper (See Note 3)
Instructions
- Add the feta cheese, yogurt, olive oil, vinegar, and both peppers to a food processor. Process until the ingredients are almost smooth and combined, about 30 seconds.
- Transfer to a bowl and serve at room temperature with a drizzle of olive oil. Store covered and refrigerated up to 1 week.
Notes
- Use Greek feta cheese crumbled to about 2 1/2 to 3 cups for authentic flavor.
- Seed and coarsely chop one large green bell pepper for freshness and texture.
- A banana pepper or a Pepperoncini can be used; substituting a Fresno chile increases heat.
