Tzatziki Sauce Recipe (5 Minutes)

Tzatziki sauce is a chilled yogurt-based condiment featuring shredded cucumber, garlic, dill, and lemon juice or vinegar. This preparation balances creamy and cooling textures with fresh herbal and citrus flavors. It is versatile for dipping, spreading, or serving alongside grilled meats and vegetables.

Description

This quick Tzatziki Sauce uses plain Greek yogurt combined with shredded or diced cucumber that is salted and drained to remove excess moisture. Fresh minced garlic and chopped dill provide aromatic intensity while lemon juice or white wine vinegar adds acidity and brightness. Salt and pepper finish the seasoning.

The sauce texture is thick and creamy with contrasting cucumber bits for freshness. The flavors mellow and integrate best after chilling for some time. The garlic provides pungency and herbal dill adds a distinctive Mediterranean note. The lemon juice contributes a bright tanginess.

Tzatziki is ideal as a sauce for grilled meats like lamb or chicken, as a dip for vegetables or pita bread, and as a spread in sandwiches or wraps. It is popular in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines for its refreshing qualities.

For thicker sauce, the yogurt can be strained before mixing; cucumber moisture should be pressed out to prevent dilution. The sauce keeps well in the fridge for several days but flavors may soften over time.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups yogurt 480 g, plain, Greek
  • 1 cup cucumber 200 g, shredded or diced
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice 30 mL, or white wine vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 Tbsp dill chopped
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Thicken Yogurt (optional): For a thicker consistency, you can strain the yogurt by lining a mesh sieve with cheesecloth or paper towels, then spooning in the yogurt. Strain for 30 minutes to 3 hours.
  2. Cucumber: Meanwhile, transfer diced or shredded cucumber to a mesh sieve or colander and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Let sit for a few minutes while you measure everything else for the tzatziki, then use a rubber spatula to press out excess moisture.
  3. Mix: Mix together yogurt, cucumber, dill, garlic, and lemon.
  4. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed. Let chill in the fridge until ready to enjoy!

Notes

  • Allow the tzatziki to chill for several hours or overnight to develop milder, integrated flavors.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days for best freshness.
  • To make a vegan variation, substitute the Greek yogurt with a dairy-free yogurt alternative.
