Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ tsp salt

Instructions

  1. First, in a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and honey. Stir until the honey is dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes foamy.
  2. Add the olive oil to the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and salt.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the yeast mixture, stirring with a wooden spoon or a dough whisk until a rough dough forms.
  5. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8 to 10 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  6. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  7. Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and shape it into a loaf.
  8. Place the shaped loaf into a greased loaf pan and cover it with the kitchen towel. Let it rise for another 30 to 45 minutes, or until it rises above the edges of the pan.
  9. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the loaf in the preheated oven for about 35 to 40 minutes, or until it turns golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Finally, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
