Angel Wing Cookies

Angel Wing Cookies are thin, crispy, twisted fried cookies made from a dough of eggs, sour cream, sugar, milk, and flour. The dough is rested before being rolled and sliced into strips, which are twisted and fried until lightly golden. The finished cookies are dusted with powdered sugar, offering a delicate crunch and a subtle tang from the sour cream.

Description

The dough for Angel Wing Cookies is prepared by combining flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt with a mixture of eggs, milk, and sour cream. The dough is kneaded until smooth and then rested for 15 minutes to relax the gluten and make shaping easier. It is then rolled out and cut into long strips roughly one inch wide and four inches long.

Each strip has a slit cut through the center where one end is pulled through to form a distinctive twisted shape. These shapes are deep-fried in neutral cooking oil over medium-low heat until the cookies achieve a light golden color and crisp texture. Once drained on paper towels, they are generously dusted with powdered sugar to enhance sweetness and contrast with the slightly tangy dough from the sour cream.

Angel Wing Cookies are traditional treats that can be served at festive occasions or enjoyed with tea or coffee. Their crisp texture and mild sweetness make them a distinctive option among fried pastries.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 egg
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • neutral cooking oil for frying, generic cooking oil
  • powdered sugar for sprinking

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Set the mixture aside.
  2. In another bowl, whisk the eggs together with the milk and sour cream. Next, combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients.
  3. Work the dough with your hands until you get an even, smooth consistency. Set the dough aside to rest for 15 minutes.
  4. Preheat a deep skillet with oil over medium-low heat. While the oil is heating, roll the dough out into a flat piece and slice it into long, 1-inch thick strips.
  5. Slice the strips horizontally to where they are about 4 inches in length. Next, slice a slit into the center of each strip. To form the cookie, take one end of the strip and insert it through the slit.
  6. Fry the cookies in small batches until they turn a slight shade of golden brown.
  7. Remove the cookies from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels. Dust each cookie with powdered sugar. Enjoy!
