Apple and Mincemeat Crumble

Apple and Mincemeat Crumble layers chopped apples coated in mincemeat beneath a golden topping made from melted butter, flour, oats, and optional sugar. Baking yields a bubbling, warmly spiced filling under a crumbly, slightly crunchy layer, combining tart apple texture with sweet mincemeat flavors. This dessert suits those seeking a comforting, rustic dish with easy assembly.

Description

This crumble pairs fresh apples with mincemeat to form the filling, which is placed in a buttered ovenproof dish. The apples are peeled, cored, and chopped, then well combined with mincemeat to evenly coat them with the mixture's rich, spiced sweetness. A topping made by mixing melted butter with flour, oats, and optionally sugar is spread over the fruit layer.

Baked at 190°C (375°F) for around 35 minutes, the topping turns golden and crisp while the filling becomes hot and bubbly. The melted butter in the topping contributes to a deeper color and crumbly texture compared to the traditional method of rubbing cold butter into the flour.

The dessert offers a balance of soft, spiced apple bites and crunchy oats under a rich topping. It can be served warm, making it suitable as a cozy dessert during cooler months.

Melted butter shortens baking time and enhances topping color and texture compared to cold butter methods, offering a practical tip for improved results.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 apple
  • 6 tablespoon mincemeat
  • 150 g butter
  • 150 g flour
  • 50 g oats
  • sugar I find that the filling is sweet enough, and did not add any sugar to my topping, but granulated sugar can be used if wished to, optional, 50g

Instructions

  1. Butter an ovenproof dish.
  2. Peel, core and chop the apples, and add them to the dish together with the mincemeat.
  3. Mix well to get the apples fully coated in the mincemeat.
  4. Melt the butter and allow it to cool slightly.
  5. In a bowl, add the flour, oats, melted butter and sugar if used.
  6. Mix to get a lumpy mixture.
  7. Top the apple and mincemeat with the flour topping, and bake at 190 degrees Celsius (375 Fahrenheit) for 35 minutes until golden and the filling is bubbling hot.

Notes

  • Melting the butter before mixing with flour and oats leads to a golden, crumbly topping and slightly shorter baking time.
  • You may adjust ingredient quantities for different serving sizes using the serving selector if available.
  • Sugar in the topping is optional since the mincemeat often provides enough sweetness.
