Apple and Pear Crumble
Description
The Apple and Pear Crumble is a baked dessert combining a mixture of diced apples and pears tossed with light brown sugar and cinnamon, forming a lightly spiced fruit base. The topping is made by crumbling together plain flour, caster sugar, and cubed butter until fine and well combined, creating a classic crumble texture. Once assembled, it is baked in the oven at 190°C until the topping turns golden and crisp, while the fruit softens underneath, yielding a pleasing balance between a tender filling and crumbly surface.
This crumble is versatile as a dessert or cozy treat, served warm alone or with cream, custard, or ice cream if desired. It can also be adapted with different fruit options like rhubarb or peaches for seasonal variety. The topping mixture's crumbly texture and even browning provide a familiar and comforting mouthfeel that works well with the natural sweetness and moisture of the fruit.
To add texture variety, part of the flour can be replaced with oats to make the topping more like a crisp. Extra crumble topping can be prepared and stored in the refrigerator for future use. Leftovers can be kept for a few days in the fridge, though freezing may soften the topping's texture. This recipe is also a helpful choice for involving children in baking, as they can easily participate in mixing the crumble by hand.
Ingredients
Filling
- 3 apple diced
- 3 pear diced
- 0.5 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 tablespoon light brown sugar
Crumble
- 250 g plain flour
- 120 g caster sugar
- 150 g butter cubed
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 190°C/170°C(fan)/375°F/Gas 5.
- Put 3 Apple (chopped) and 3 Pears (chopped) into a baking dish and add 3 tablespoon Light brown sugar and 0.5 teaspoon Cinnamon and mix well.
- Put 250 g Plain flour, 120 g Caster sugar and 150 g Butter into a bowl and using your fingers, crumble the butter and mix it together. This process will take a while, as you want to get the butter really fine and all mixed in.
- Cover the fruit with the crumble mixture.
- Put into the oven for 40 minutes until the topping is golden brown.
Notes
- Doubles well: make extra crumble topping and store in the fridge up to one week for other fruit crumbles.
- For added texture, replace a quarter of the flour with oats to make a crisp-like topping.
- Try substituting other fruits like rhubarb or peach while keeping the same crumble recipe.
- Leftover crumble can be refrigerated for 2-3 days, but freezing affects topping crispness.
- This recipe is suitable for children to help mix the crumble topping with their hands.
