Apple and Plum Crumble
Description
Apple and Plum Crumble uses fresh fruit chunks of apples and plums mixed with light brown sugar, orange zest, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg, which infuse the fruit with gentle spice and citrus brightness. The topping is a classic crumble made by rubbing butter into plain flour and caster sugar until fine crumbs form, then scattered evenly over the fruit filling.
Baking at a moderate temperature until the topping turns golden yields a crunchy, buttery crust that contrasts with the tender, juicy fruit beneath. The fruit softens during baking, creating a warm, slightly syrupy base with spice notes from cinnamon and nutmeg.
This dessert is flexible and can be adapted to other fruits such as rhubarb or peach. It can be served warm, perfect for cooler seasons or after dinner. The recipe also invites participation from children who will enjoy mixing the crumble topping by hand.
You can double the crumble topping, store extras in the fridge for use on other fruit crumbles, or freeze leftovers, though freezing may soften the topping slightly.
Ingredients
- 5 plum sliced
- 4 apple cut in to chunks
- 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 40 g light brown sugar
- 0.5 orange zest only
- 250 g plain flour
- 120 g caster sugar
- 150 g butter cubed
Instructions
- Preheat your oven at 190°C/170°C(fan)/375°F/Gas 5.
- Put 4 Apple and 5 Plums into a baking dish and add 40 g Light brown sugar, zest of 0.5 Orange, 0.5 teaspoon Ground nutmeg and 0.5 teaspoon Ground cinnamon and mix well.
- Put 250 g Plain flour and 120 g Caster sugar into a bowl and using your fingers, crumble in 150 g Butter and mix it together. This process will take a while, as you want to get the butter really fine and all mixed in.
- Scatter the crumble mixture over the fruit.
- Put into the oven for 40 minutes until the topping is golden brown.
Notes
- Optional oats can replace a quarter of the flour in the topping to create a crisp texture.
- The crumble topping can be doubled and stored in the fridge for up to a week to use on other fruit desserts.
- Leftover crumble can be frozen but may lose some crispness; it keeps 2-3 days in the fridge otherwise.
- This recipe is suitable for children to help with, especially mixing the crumble by hand.
