Ingredients

  • 150 g cake flour (1 cup)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 3 tbsp black sesame seeds paste *1
  • 60 g brown sugar (1/2 cup) *2
  • 1 egg
  • 120 ml milk (1/2 cup)

Instructions

  1. Line 6 ramekins with muffin baking paper cups
  2. Sift flour and baking powder and set aside.
  3. Place black sesame seed paste, sugar and egg in a large mixing bowl. 
  4. Combine them all together with a whisk.
  5. Add milk gradually, a little at a time and mix well after each addition.
  6. Add sifted flour and baking powder to the sesame seed paste bowl. 
  7. Combine sesame seed paste mixture and flour with a whisk. Ensure you do not over mix it. Continue to mix until it is just combined.
  8. Using an ice cream scoop, divide the mixture evenly to the lined ramekins. 
  9. Steam the mixture in a steamer for 12 minutes.  

Notes

  • Black sesame paste can be made by grinding 1/4 cup black sesame seeds with 1 tablespoon sesame seed oil until smooth.
  • Brown sugar can be replaced with white sugar if unavailable, although brown sugar adds a richer taste.
  • Use muffin baking paper cups to line ramekins, preventing sticking during steaming.
  • Do not overmix the batter after adding flour and baking powder to keep buns tender.
