Bratwurst Burger Recipe
Description
This recipe uses bratwurst sausage meat removed from the casing and formed into burger patties. The patties are cooked on a grill or skillet until fully cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F, ensuring safety and juicy texture.
Caramelized onions are cooked slowly until soft and sweet, then mixed with sauerkraut to provide a vinegary, tender topping. A homemade sauce of mayonnaise and mustard adds creaminess and slight tang. Swiss cheese melts over the warm patties for a mild, nutty finish.
Serving these burgers on toasted buns with the onions piled on top creates a hearty sandwich with layers of flavor and texture. This burger variation offers an alternative to traditional ground beef burgers, celebrating bratwurst flavors in a convenient patty form.
Taking care to manage flare-ups on the grill and confirming full cooking temperature are important safety measures. A spray bottle of water on hand can help control flare-ups while grilling.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large onion sliced
- ½ cup sauerkraut
- ¼ cup mayonnaise can be light
- 1 tablespoon mustard or dijon, German style
- 6 links bratwurst sausage
- 4 lices swiss cheese
- 4 Hamburger Bun
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, occasionally stirring, until it is very soft, about 7 minutes. Stir in the sauerkraut and remove the pan from the heat.
- While the onions are cooking, make the sauce. Mix the mayonnaise and mustard together in a small bowl.
- Remove and discard the sausage casings and place the meat in a bowl. Use your hands to break up the meat to resemble ground pork.
- Form the bratwurst meat into four burger patties.
- Preheat your grill to medium heat. Once it's hot, cook the bratwurst burger patties until they are fully cooked and have reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. See notes. Then top with the swiss cheese and let it melt. If you'd like, warm the burger buns. You can also sear these burgers in a dry pan over medium-high heat for 5 minutes per side.
- Serve the burgers with the mustard mayo sauce and the onions piled on top.
Notes
- Keep the grill clean and have a spray bottle of water nearby to control flare-ups when cooking bratwurst burgers.
- Ensure the burgers reach an internal temperature of 165°F for safe consumption since they're made from sausage meat.
